TEXAS billionaire and former Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks has passed away at the age of 79, according to his company. His firm, Hicks Holdings LLC, announced on Saturday that he died peacefully in Dallas, surrounded by his family. Known for his major role in American and global sports, Hicks left behind a lasting, though occasionally controversial, legacy.
A long-time sports fan, Hicks owned the NHL’s Dallas Stars from 1995 to 2011.
During his time with the team, the Stars achieved several milestones, including winning the historic 1999 Stanley Cup. He also owned the MLB’s Texas Rangers from 1998 to 2010, during which the team made it to the World Series, further establishing his influence on the sports scene in Texas.
In 2007, Hicks and George Gillett bought a 50% share in Premier League club Liverpool FC.
Their ownership, however, faced financial challenges and opposition from fans, leading to a court-ordered sale of the club. Despite this difficult period, Hicks was still highly respected in U.S. sports circles. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones praised him as a "champion of sports," saying his drive and accomplishments made a lasting impact on the city.
Hicks is survived by his wife, Cinda Cree Hicks, whom he married 35 years ago, along with their six children and 14 grandchildren.
In a family statement, they said that while he had many achievements in business and sports, his most cherished role was that of a father. "No matter the challenges he faced in life, he was always generous and loving to his family," they said.
Saddened to say that my hero, may dad, Tom Hicks went to spend eternity with the Lord. He loved our Republic. God Bless.
