BENIN'S PRESIDENT Patrice Talon made a live TV appearance for the first time since a failed coup attempt, telling the country that "the situation is totally under control." His appearance happened during a time of growing confusion and conflicting reports about military actions in the capital.
Talon said the coup was carried out by "a small group of soldiers" and confirmed that security forces quickly stopped the threat.
He thanked the loyal military units for their fast response, saying that important government services are still running normally.
The president's message on TV is thought to help ease worries after people in the city heard loud gunshots near major government buildings.
So far, officials haven't shared information about any arrests or injuries from the incident.
Observers from other countries are watching closely because Benin has been seen as one of the more stable democracies in West Africa.
The government is likely to give more updates later in the day.
