On December 19, the Uganda Revenue Authority stated that anyone wanting to import Starlink equipment needs a letter of approval from the country's Chief of Army Staff, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
He is also the son of President Yoweri Museveni.
The statement said, "Any announcement about importing these products must include a letter of approval from the Chief of the Defence Forces (UPDF)."
This decision to stop the import of Starlink gear comes just weeks before the January 15 elections.
It has caused worry among opposition figures who believe the government might be planning to cut off internet access during the polls.
Bobi Wine, the main opponent of current President Yoweri Museveni, has criticized the move, saying it is part of a plan to cheat in the voting.
Uganda is scheduled to hold general elections on January 15.
President Museveni, who is 81 years old, has held power for almost 40 years and is running for a seventh term.
He is facing strong competition from Bobi Wine, a musician who became a politician and came in second in the 2021 election.
