Thousands of Congolese refugees flee to Burundi

The UN refugee agency reports that almost 90,000 refugees have moved to Burundi after a recent increase in violence in South Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The people who have been forced to leave their homes are now living in very difficult conditions in crowded camps with very limited access to food and clean water.

Doctors Without Borders is worried that the overcrowding might make the health and humanitarian situation even worse.

Since the refugees started arriving in Burundi two weeks ago, MSF has been treating around 200 people each day.

Among the thousands of displaced individuals, half are children under the age of 18, including many women, some of whom are pregnant, who say they haven’t had enough to eat for days.

These attacks have also helped the M23 militant group gain more ground, as they have taken control of several key towns, including Homa and Bukavu.
