ONE of the four sons of Mexico's well-known drug boss, Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, Joaquín Guzmán López, has admitted guilt in a U.S. court for drug trafficking. His guilty plea was made on Monday, following a promise from U.S. prosecutors in May that they would not seek the death penalty against him.
Joaquín Guzmán López, who is 39 years old, is a member of Los Chapitos, a group created by El Chapo's sons.
His brother, Ovidio Guzmán, also confessed in July to charges related to drug trafficking, gun violations, and money laundering. Their father, who helped start the Sinaloa Cartel, is currently serving a life sentence in a high-security prison in Colorado.
According to authorities, the brothers have grown their criminal activities since their father was arrested. Guzmán López was captured last year with another cartel leader, Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, after arriving in Texas on a private plane. Officials say that López convinced Zambada to get on the plane by telling him he was going to northern Mexico to look at properties.
In court, López admitted to being in charge of making and moving large amounts of cocaine, heroin, meth, cannabis, and fentanyl into the U.S. Fentanyl, which is more than 50 times stronger than heroin, is the main cause of drug-related deaths for Americans between the ages of 18 and 45.
