TUCHEL CONSIDERING UNUSUAL MEASURES TO COMBAT EXTREME HEAT AT 2026 WORLD CUP

TUCHEL is considering keeping substitutes inside the dressing room during matches at the 2026 World Cup to combat extreme heat. Speaking to BBC Sport, the England manager revealed that this unusual measure might be necessary to help players stay fresh for the later stages of games.

Tuchel noted that similar practices were observed during the Club World Cup in the United States last June, where high temperatures raised health concerns.

Medical experts and players’ unions previously warned about heat stress, dehydration, and reduced recovery times, all of which could impact performance in a tournament co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. “You can't play the same football in 45°C as in 21°C,” Tuchel said, stressing the need for adaptation and careful preparation.

Despite the environmental challenges, the England manager expressed growing confidence in his squad.

England enjoyed a perfect qualifying campaign, winning all eight matches, scoring 22 goals and maintaining a flawless defensive record. Tuchel believes these performances reflect a team that has become “closer and stronger,” adding that he is “more confident than ever” that England can compete for the title.

England will be in pot one for Friday’s World Cup draw, ensuring they avoid fellow top seeds France, Spain and Argentina until at least the semi-finals, provided each team tops its group.

Tuchel said the squad is focused on arriving in June fully prepared, highlighting team unity and depth as crucial pillars of their tournament campaign.
