PROSECUTORS In Turkey Have Accused Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu Of 142 Corruption-Related Crimes, Which Could Result In 828 To 2,352 Years In Prison If Convicted. Imamoglu, A Key Political Rival Of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Has Been In Detention Since March Over Bribery Allegations.

The Republican People’s Party (CHP), To Which Imamoglu Belongs, Strongly Denies The Charges, Saying They Are Politically Motivated To Weaken Imamoglu Ahead Of The 2028 Presidential Race. Prosecutors Claim He And 401 Others Formed A Large Criminal Network Involved In Bribery, Money Laundering, And Fraud.

Lead Prosecutor Akin Gürlek Said After An Eight-Month Investigation That 105 Of The Suspects Are Already In Custody, Accusing Imamoglu Of 12 Counts Of Bribery, 7 Of Money Laundering, And 7 Of Fraud Against Public Institutions. The Anadolu News Agency Estimates The Charges Could Total Up To 2,430 Years In Prison.
