THE UN Human Rights Chief, Volker Türk, Has Called For An Independent Investigation Into Reports Of Killings And Other Human Rights Violations That Occurred During Tanzania’s October 29 Elections.

According To Information Received By The UN Human Rights Office From Various Sources In Tanzania, Hundreds Of Protesters And Civilians Were Allegedly Killed, While Many Others Were Injured Or Arrested. The Office Said It Has Been Unable To Confirm The Exact Number Of Deaths Due To Security Concerns And Internet Shutdowns After The Election.

Türk Said The Stories Of Families Searching For Missing Loved Ones In Police Stations And Hospitals Are Heartbreaking. He Urged Tanzanian Authorities To Reveal The Whereabouts Of The Missing, Return The Bodies Of The Dead To Their Families, And Ensure They Receive Dignified Burials.

He Also Called On The Government To Release All Opposition Leaders, Including Chadema Leader Tundu Lissu, And Others Detained Before And After The Election. Reports Indicate That Over 150 People Have Been Arrested, Many Of Them Young People Facing Treason Charges.
