On Monday, Xi Jinping, head of the Central Military Commission (CMC), handed out certificates to promote two military officers to the rank of general. The officers promoted are Yang Zhibin, who leads the Eastern Theater Command of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), and Han Shengyan, who commands the PLA's Central Theater Command.

Zhang Youxia, a vice chairman of the CMC, announced the promotion orders, which were signed by Xi.
The ceremony took place in Beijing, and was led by Zhang Shengmin, also a vice chairman of the CMC.
Xi Jinping offered his congratulations to the two newly promoted generals.
The rank of general is the highest rank for officers who are still serving actively in the military in China.
