Somalia's Electoral Commission has said that the counting of votes will start early this morning after the polling stations in the capital, Mogadishu, closed on Sunday evening. This election was a big deal because it was the first local council vote held in the city in more than 57 years.

The voting took place with a lot of security, and large areas of the city were closed off during the process. Around 1,600 candidates ran for 390 council positions across Mogadishu.
Even though some opposition groups didn't take part, local observers said the vote was fair, open, and peaceful. Experts believe this election is an important move towards ending politics based on clan loyalty and is seen as an important step before Somalia's presidential election next year.
