A big fight.
For the last few days, a video has been getting a lot of attention online. It shows two rats fighting over a bagel that was left behind on the New York subway tracks.
The rats stood on either side of the bagel, trying to take it for more than two minutes.
A third rat even joined the fight before a subway train came and ended the battle.
Like in Paris and other big cities, it's common to see rats in the streets or on the subway in New York.
To deal with this, the city has started using a new method: stressing the rats to stop them from having babies.
To do this, New York officials have taken steps like cleaning up trash, sealing openings in buildings, and informing people.
Their aim is to stop rats from getting food, which causes stress in the animals and lowers their reproduction rates.
Significant increase in funding
The city has increased money for rat control, with $4.7 million set aside for 2025, compared to $3.5 million in 2023.
Since these actions began, there has been a big drop in rat complaints.
According to official data shared by AFP in August 2025, there was a 25% decrease in 2024 compared to the year before.
Rats are everywhere—in the streets, on the subway, and even on planes!
On Wednesday, December 10, 250 passengers were stuck in Aruba and Bonaire (Caribbean) after a very large rat got on a plane.
