One person died right away, and twelve others were hurt badly on Tuesday morning after a terrible road accident happened in the Kondigo area on the Kisumu-Bondo Road.
ACCIDENT
The crash happened at 10 a.m. and involved an Isuzu FRR lorry with registration number KDM 231S, driven by Brian Ajega, 28, and a Toyota matatu with registration number KDB 257G, operated by Oketch Agugi, 32, who works for Eton Sacco Shuttle.
According to the police, the lorry was going from Bondo to Kisumu when the driver lost control while going down a slope.
In a last-ditch effort to avoid hitting a cow that suddenly ran onto the road from a side path, the matatu driver turned into the opposite lane, causing a head-on crash.
The crash was very serious.
One passenger, named Eunice Achieng Adoyo, 38, got very bad head injuries and died on the spot.
Twelve other people in the matatu were seriously hurt, with broken bones and deep cuts.
Some other victims, whose names haven’t been announced yet, were taken to nearby hospitals.
The injured were first taken to Kombewa Sub-County Hospital for urgent care and then sent to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) for more treatment.
The body of the deceased was taken to the morgue at Kombewa Hospital for a postmortem.
Both vehicles were badly damaged, with their front parts crushed and the windscreens broken.
They were taken to the nearest police station for inspection.
The police have warned drivers on the Kisumu-Bondo road to be careful, especially on the sloping Kondigo section, which has had several accidents in the last few months.
The police are now looking into the details of this accident.
