SIR Terence English, The Surgeon Who Performed The First Successful Open-Heart Surgery In Britain, Has Died Aged 93.

He Faced Government And Public Opposition In 1979 As He Fought For Permission To Perform The Operation At Papworth Hospital, Cambridge.

The Historic Operation Was Carried Out In August 1979 On 52-Year-Old Keith Castle, Who Survived For More Than Five Years After The Transplant. The Event Paved The Way For Major Advances In Heart Transplantation In The UK And Around The World.

His Family Said Sir Terence Died On Sunday At His Home In Iffley, Oxford, Six Days After Suffering A Stroke. He Was Born In South Africa In October 1932 And Had Previously Studied Mining Engineering At The University Of The Witwatersrand Before Changing Direction And Studying Medicine At Guy’s Hospital, London.

Sir Terence Is Survived By His Wife Ann, With Whom He Married In 1963 And Had Four Children: Katherine, Arthur, Mary And William. His Children Have Said They Are "Hugely Proud" Of The Work And Legacy He Left Behind, Remembering Their Mother Ann As A Key Pillar In Enabling Him To Achieve His Great Career While Remaining Close To Family.
