ICC REJECTS REQUEST FOR PROVISIONAL RELEASE OF RODRIGO DUTERTE

THE International Criminal Court (ICC) has turned down a request to temporarily release former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who is being charged with crimes against humanity over his drug war. This means Duterte will stay in custody as his trial proceeds.

Judge Luz del Carmen Ibáñez Carranza explained that Duterte’s legal team did not provide enough proof to justify his release on humanitarian grounds, especially concerning claims about his health.

She stated that the arguments were not strong enough to meet the court’s requirements for temporary release.

The case has been watched closely by the global community due to the high number of deaths linked to Duterte’s drug war.

The ICC is still looking into whether serious human rights abuses occurred during the operation. The court’s ruling shows its firm position on such requests, especially in cases involving serious charges against former leaders.
