THE SOUTHERN African Development Community (SADC) Has Appointed South Africa As Its Interim Chair, Following Madagascar’s Decision To Step Down Due To Ongoing Political Challenges.

This Decision Was Made During An Extraordinary Virtual Summit Of SADC Heads Of State Held On November 7, 2025. Madagascar Explained That It Could Not Continue Leading The Bloc Amid Domestic Issues, And Under SADC Rules, South Africa Will Serve As Chair Until August 2026.

Leaders At The Summit Also Expressed Condolences To Families Affected By Recent Protests In Madagascar And Tanzania, Which Led To Loss Of Life And Property Damage. They Urged Peace And Stability In Both Nations.

SADC Congratulated The Newly Elected Presidents Of Malawi (Arthur Peter Mutharika), Seychelles (Patrick Herminie), And Tanzania (Samia Suluhu Hassan), And Agreed To Continue Focusing On Its Key Theme — “Advancing Industrialisation, Agricultural Transformation, And Energy Transition For A Resilient SADC.”
