GUINEA’S Supreme Court Has Approved Nine Candidates To Run In Next Month’s Presidential Election, Including The Country’s Transitional President Mamady Doumbouya. The Vote, Set For December 28, Is Meant To Return The Nation To Civilian Rule.
The New Constitution, Passed In A September Referendum, Allows Doumbouya To Contest. However, Former President Alpha Condé And Ex–Prime Minister Cellou Dalein Diallo Were Ruled Ineligible Due To Age And Residency Limits In The New Charter.
Doumbouya’s Opponents Include Abdoulaye Yero Balde, A Former Education Minister And Deputy Central Bank Governor, And Faya Millimono, An Opposition Leader. Lansana Kouyate, Another Former Prime Minister, Plans To Appeal After His Application Was Rejected.
Doumbouya, Who Took Power In A 2021 Military Coup, Had Earlier Promised A Two-Year Transition, But The Deadline Passed. The Coming Election Is Seen As A Crucial Step Toward Restoring Democracy In Guinea.
