THE Government Of Tanzania Has Announced The Suspension Of The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Service, Popularly Known As Mwendokasi, Operating In Dar Es Salaam Along The Gerezani–Kimara And Gerezani–Mbagala Routes.
The Decision Aims To Allow For A Thorough Assessment Of The Damage Caused During Protests That Took Place On Wednesday, October 29, 2025, In The City.
According To Authorities, The Demonstrations Led To Significant Destruction Of BRT Infrastructure, Particularly Along Morogoro Road, Where Several Stations Were Vandalized, Ticketing Systems Destroyed, And Some Stations Set On Fire. The Assessment Is Expected To Determine The Extent Of The Damage And The Resources Required To Restore Normal Operations.
Dar Es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila Made The Announcement During A Press Briefing, Urging Regular BRT Passengers To Seek Alternative Means Of Transport While The Evaluation And Repair Processes Are Underway. He Emphasized That The Suspension Is Necessary To Ensure The Safety And Reliability Of The Transport System Once It Resumes.
Chalamila Also Directed The Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA) To Issue Temporary Permits To Conventional Bus Operators So They Can Provide Services Along Routes Previously Covered By The BRT. He Noted That Restoring The Damaged Ticketing And Control Systems Will Take Time, But The Government Is Committed To Ensuring That Transport Services Return To Normal As Soon As Possible.
