A COURT In Gabon Has Sentenced Sylvia Bongo, The Wife Of Former President Ali Bongo, And Their Son Noureddin Bongo To 20 Years In Prison For Embezzling Public Funds.
The Verdict Was Delivered On Tuesday By A Special Criminal Court In Libreville After A Two-Day Hearing. Both Sylvia And Noureddin Were Absent From Court, Accused Of Deceiving Former President Ali Bongo And Stealing State Property.
Prosecutors Said The Two, Who Also Hold French Citizenship, Took Advantage Of Ali Bongo’s Illness After His 2018 Stroke To Divert Public Money For Personal Gain.
Ali Bongo, Who Ruled Gabon For 14 Years Before Being Removed From Power By The Military In August 2023, Has Not Been Charged. Meanwhile, 10 Of His Close Associates Are Also Facing Corruption Charges In A Trial Set To Continue Later This Week.
