SOS Children’s Villages, The International Charity Operating In More Than 130 Countries, Revealed On Thursday That Its Late Founder Committed Sexual And Physical Abuse Over Several Decades Before His Death In 1986. The Organization Confirmed That It Holds Records Of Eight Cases For Which Compensation Was Paid To Victims.

Founded In 1949 In Austria To Support Orphans Of World War II, The Organization Made The Disclosure As It Continues To Address Fresh Allegations Of Abuse At Some Of Its Facilities In Austria In Recent Years. The Charity Said It Plans To “Relaunch” Its Operations While Conducting A Comprehensive Review Of Both Current And Historical Abuse Claims.

“In Recent Weeks, More Victims And Staff Members Have Come Forward During The Investigation,” SOS Children’s Villages Said In A Statement, Adding That It Is Pursuing Every Report And Has Strengthened Internal Research Into Historical Cases Of Misconduct.

As Part Of The Ongoing Inquiry, Investigators Uncovered Eight Confirmed Victim Protection Cases Involving The Charity’s Founder, Hermann Gmeiner, Which Allegedly Occurred At Four Unidentified Locations In Austria Between The 1950s And 1980s.

All Eight Victims, Whose Cases Were Reviewed Between 2013 And 2023, Have Since Received Compensation Payments, The Statement Noted. However, The Organization Did Not Disclose The Amounts Paid Or Provide Further Details About The Victims Or The Nature Of The Offenses.
