HUNDREDS Of Residents From Various Neighborhoods In And Around Mbozi District, Songwe Region, Gathered To Attend The Funeral Of 12-Year-Old Josiah Benjamin Makelo, Who Tragically Passed Away After Reportedly Being Pecked By A Chicken During The Night.
The Burial Took Place Today, October 13, 2025, At The Hasanga Community Cemetery In Mbozi District. The Event Drew A Large Crowd Including Government Officials, Religious Leaders, Elders, And Ordinary Citizens Who Came To Pay Their Final Respects.
It Was Reported That The Boy Was Pecked By A Chicken Shortly After Returning From A Primary School Graduation Celebration. Despite Efforts Involving Medical Treatment And Prayers, The Child’s Condition Deteriorated And Eventually Led To His Death.
The Boy's Father, Benjamin Makelo, Was Overcome With Emotion At The Graveside And Had To Be Supported By Family Members As He Struggled To Stand.
Raphael Mtafya, A Local Leader And Choir Member At The Church The Boy Attended, Expressed Shock Over The Mysterious Nature Of The Death. He Recounted That Josiah Had Earlier Shared A Disturbing Dream In Which He Was Pecked By A Chicken. The Following Night, Around 1:00 AM, He Reportedly Awoke In Pain, Claiming That The Same Chicken From His Dream Had Pecked Him On The Forehead. By Morning, He Began Experiencing Severe Pain.
Josiah Was First Taken To Vwawa District Hospital, Where Tests Revealed No Known Illness. He Was Later Taken To Church For Prayers, And Subsequently To The Songwe Regional Referral Hospital. Again, No Medical Diagnosis Could Explain His Condition.
Eventually, Josiah Was Taken Back Home, Where His Health Rapidly Declined. His Eye Became Swollen Shut, And He Began Experiencing Severe Diarrhea. He Passed Away Around 2:00 AM On The Morning Of October 12, 2025.
Mtafya, Who Also Serves As A Local Ten-Cell Leader, Said, “The Boy’s Father Is A Sunday School Teacher. Josiah Was A Choir Member And Well-Versed In The Bible. We Prayed For Him, But Unfortunately, It Was Beyond Our Control. His Death Has Shocked Many.”
Leonard Mwambene, The Chairman Of Maendeleo Neighborhood, Attended The Funeral And Reflected On The Incident, Calling It Deeply Tragic And Unprecedented In The Area. He Urged Parents To Be Cautious When Raising Animals Around Children, Especially In Light Of Such Unusual Circumstances.
Hasanga Ward Executive Officer Frola Ndamu Acknowledged The Incident, Stating That Such Matters Are In The Hands Of God And Sometimes Beyond Human Understanding.
Songwe Regional Police Commander, Augostino Senga, Stated That The Case Had Not Yet Reached His Office But Added That Chickens Can Carry Harmful Bacteria. If The Child Was Indeed Pecked And Did Not Receive A Tetanus Injection In Time, That Could Have Led To His Death.
