A DRAMATIC SCENE Unfolded In India’s Supreme Court This Week When A Lawyer Threw A Shoe At Chief Justice B.R. Gavai, Following The Judge’s Controversial Remarks About The Hindu God Vishnu.
The Lawyer, Identified As Rakesh Kishore, Reportedly Hurled His Shoe During A Monday Court Session In Delhi, Shouting That India Would Not Tolerate Insults Toward Sanatan Dharma (Hinduism).
“India Will Not Tolerate Insults To Sanatan Dharma,” Kishore Yelled As Security Officers Removed Him From The Courtroom.
According To Witnesses Quoted By The Bbc, The Shoe Hit The Chief Justice’s Bench And Grazed Both Him And Another Judge Before Landing Behind Them. Kishore Was Immediately Detained By Security And Later Suspended From Practicing Law.
Chief Justice Gavai Remained Calm Throughout The Incident And Has Not Commented Publicly. The Indian Government Has Stated That No Criminal Charges Will Be Filed Against Kishore.
The Confrontation Stemmed From A Case Concerning A Seven-Foot Statue Of Lord Vishnu At A Temple In Madhya Pradesh. Last Month, Justice Gavai And His Panel Rejected A Petition Seeking To Rebuild The Statue, Reportedly Telling The Complainant To “Go Ask God Himself To Do Something.”
The Remark Sparked Outrage Across Sections Of The Hindu Community, Who Accused The Chief Justice Of Mocking Their Faith. Justice Gavai Later Clarified, Through The Press Trust Of India, That He Respects “All Religions.”
Kishore, Speaking Later To Indian Outlet The Print, Said The Court’s Decision Was Not Just Dismissive But “Disrespectful” Toward Lord Vishnu.
Throwing A Shoe At Someone Is Considered A Deep Insult And Public Humiliation In India And Many Other Parts Of The World.
