MATTHEW RHYS TO PLAY 'SOFT AND COWARDLY' MAYOR OF CURSED ISLAND

Emmy Award-winning actor Matthew Rhys will star as the mayor of a cursed island town in his new television show, "Widow's Bay". In the Apple TV series, Rhys, who is 52 years old, plays Tom Loftis, a mayor trying to bring life back to his struggling community.

However, the town's residents see him as "soft and cowardly".The 10-episode drama is described as a mix of horror and comedy and is set in a small town located 40 miles (64km) off the coast of New England.

The town has poor mobile service, no wi-fi, and a population that is deeply superstitious and doesn't respect the mayor. Loftis is determined to attract tourists and provide a better life for his teenage son.

According to the show's synopsis, his plan initially works and tourists start coming in.

But soon, the locals were right about him. After many years of calm, old stories that once seemed too strange to be real start coming true again. The series blends horror with character-driven comedy and features a cast that includes Kate O'Flynn, Stephen Root, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll, and Dale Dickey.

In addition to starring, Rhys also serves as an executive producer for the series.

Emmy-winner Hiro Murai, known for directing *The Bear*, directed five episodes of *Widow's Bay*.

The Welsh actor has built a career portraying men who seem calm on the surface but hide more intense emotions underneath.

Recently, Rhys was seen in Netflix's thriller *The Beast in Me*, where he played property tycoon Nile Jarvis.

He previously portrayed a KGB sleeper agent in *The Americans*, for which he won an Emmy Award in 2018.

In November, he returned to Wales for a national tour of *Playing Burton* – a one-man stage production in which he portrayed legendary actor Richard Burton, raising funds for the Welsh National Theatre in honor of Burton's centenary.
