Celtic fans turn on Schmeichel as form woes continue

Kasper Schmeichel is facing growing criticism at Celtic after a series of weak performances from the Danish international goalkeeper has led to Wilfried Nancy's team falling behind their main rivals in the Scottish Premiership.

The Danish international has not been at his best this season, which has sparked doubts about his position in the Celtic squad.

Since he injured his shoulder while playing for Denmark in April, Schmeichel has struggled to return to his previous level.

He came under heavy scrutiny after letting in a header from Jonah Ayunga in the Premier Sports Cup final in December, and his attempt to stop Zac Sapsford's winning goal against Dundee United in the league a few days later drew criticism.

In addition, Sports analyst Chris Sutton called Schmeichel's performance against Rangers on Sunday afternoon a disaster, as Celtic lost the Old Firm derby 3-1.

When Mikey Moore scored the third goal for Rangers, pundits Neil McCann and Sutton believed Schmeichel could and should have saved it.

" That man for me there makes a big error," McCann said.

"I think he should save it." Sutton added: "Mikey Moore, not been in the game. I think you're right, Neil. Kasper Schmeichel has had a shocker there."

This reportedly became the final straw for many Celtic fans in attendance, who booed the Danish goalkeeper every time he touched the ball for the remaining 20 minutes of the match.

Sutton later commented: "Schmeichel looks out of shape to me.

He's been poor all season. The third goal was disgraceful."

The Danish international goalkeeper, who has also faced heavy criticism in the Danish media for his inconsistent performances during the World Cup qualifying campaign, will get a chance to prove himself when the Scottish champions take on Dundee United at home on Saturday.
