WHY NICO O’REILLY IS NAMED AS THE BEST LEFT-BACK FOR ENGLAND IN 2026 WORLD CUP ?

NICO O’REILLY is England’s top left-back for the 2026 World Cup after his recent performance in Manchester City’s 2-1 Champions League win over Real Madrid made him England’s first choice. Although O’Reilly came through the City academy as a central midfielder or striker, the 20-year-old has adapted well to his new role as a left-back under Pep Guardiola.

O’Reilly’s influence has been growing this season.

He earned his place in the starting line-up after an early injury to Rayan Ait-Nouri, who was expected to be the main left-back following his summer move from Wolves. However, Ait-Nouri has only started twice in all competitions so far, with O’Reilly one of City’s most reliable players, contributing both in defence and attack.

With England struggling to find good options at left-back, O’Reilly’s form has nevertheless risen at the right time.

Standing at 6ft 4in, he brings an unusual physical presence to the position, but it is his composure, his ability to make a lot of passes, and his attacking contributions that make him stand out.

His goal against Real Madrid – whether by chance or skill – was just one example of how he lives in key areas of the pitch.

There is still a long way to go this season, and the competition for a place in England’s World Cup squad will be tougher for him.

However, O’Reilly’s progress has been impressive, and if he continues at this level of performance, he will be hard to ignore when it comes to the biggest stages in world football.
