Ukrainian Troops Have Abandoned the Eastern City of Siversk

Ukrainian soldiers have left the eastern city of Siversk, which has been heavily damaged by war, as Russia keeps moving forward slowly. On Tuesday, the Ukrainian military announced the withdrawal to protect their soldiers and keep their units fighting effectively.

They noted that Russian forces have more troops, giving them a big advantage. Taking Siversk brings Russia closer to the last major strongholds, Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, which are still under Ukrainian control in the Donetsk region.

Earlier that day, officials reported that three people, including a young child, were killed in a big attack by Russian drones and missiles overnight. Russia started its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and currently controls about 20% of the country.

In a statement, the Ukrainian military said Russian troops are still carrying out attacks in the Siversk area, even though they’ve suffered major losses. They also said that Ukrainian forces had worn down the enemy during the battle in Siversk.

Before the war started, Siversk had a population of around 11,000. Two weeks ago, Russia claimed to have taken control of the city, but Ukraine denied that at the time. Siversk has been heavily damaged over many months of fierce fighting.
