‘Titanic Sinks Tonight’: BBC Two to Air New Series Told Through Survivors’ Final Moments

A new dramatised documentary series looking at the last hours of the Titanic through the voices of survivors is coming to BBC Two.

Titanic Sinks Tonight is a four-part series starting on December 28 at 9pm on BBC Two and will also be available on BBC iPlayer from the same day. The programme looks back at the night the Titanic hit an iceberg after leaving Southampton, showing the disaster minute by minute from the collision at 11:40pm until the ship sank.

Instead of using guesses or voiceovers, the series is based entirely on real survivor stories.
It uses letters, memoirs, interviews, and official records to recreate the events as they happened.

Actors play real passengers and crew, and every scene is based on actual first-hand accounts.
The makers said no made-up dialogue or characters were used, and there are no composite figures.

Some of the key moments covered include iceberg warnings from nearby ships, the growing worry that several watertight compartments were flooded, and the panic when it became clear there weren’t enough lifeboats for everyone.

The series also looks at the evacuation process and the desperate actions taken by some passengers to survive, as well as the sad ending of many others who were on the ship.

The cast includes Tyger Drew-Honey as wireless operator Harold Bride, Charlotte McCurry as Eleanor Cassebeer, Patrick Buchanan as Bruce Ismay, and Adam Rhys-Charles as second officer Charles Lightoller.

Experts providing analysis include presenter and former Royal Marine JJ Chalmers, historian Professor Suzannah Lipscomb, Admiral Lord West, and novelist Nadifa Mohamed.

Produced by Stellify Media, the series was filmed in Belfast using virtual production technology at Studio Ulster, with support from Northern Ireland Screen.
