LAKE Natron is a very extreme and interesting lake in northern Tanzania, close to the Kenyan border. It looks almost strange because its water often has a bright red or orange color, which stands out against the dry land around it. This color comes from tiny microorganisms, like certain algae and bacteria, that live in the lake's salty and mineral-filled environment.

The lake is very harsh because its water is extremely alkaline, which is similar to what you find in some cleaning products.
The high temperature and strong evaporation cause salts and minerals to build up, making it hard for most plants and animals to survive.
