CAF ANNOUNCES HISTORIC PRIZE MONEY BOOST: WINNERS TO TAKE HOME KSH 1.29 BILLION

IN a big and important decision, the leader of the Confederation of African Football, Dr Patrice Motsepe, has said that the prize for the winner of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 will go up by 43%. This is a huge amount and shows how much African football is growing in importance around the world.

The team that wins the tournament will get $10 million, which is about KSh 1.29 billion.

That’s the highest amount ever given for winning AFCON, showing that African football is becoming more powerful and popular globally.

This announcement was made on Saturday during a meeting of the CAF Executive Committee in Rabat, Morocco, just one day before the tournament is set to start.

The decision shows that CAF is serious about rewarding top teams and making African football more professional.

Compared to the 2023 tournament, where the host country, Côte d'Ivoire, won $7 million (about KSh 903 million), the 2025 prize is a big jump.

The 2021 champions, Cameroon, got $5 million (around KSh 645 million), so this increase is a 100% rise over four years. That shows how much CAF is trying to bring African football up to world standards.

The prize isn’t just for the winning team.

The runner-up will get $4 million (about KSh 516 million), and the two semi-finalists will each receive $2.5 million (around KSh 322 million). This way, more teams get rewarded, which encourages better play across Africa.

This decision comes at a time when African football is getting more attention around the world as players from the continent play in top European leagues and international events.

Dr Motsepe’s move is seen as a smart way to keep talent in Africa, make the competition more exciting, and make AFCON the most important football event in Africa.

Morocco is hosting the tournament for the first time since 1988, and the stakes are even higher than before.

Teams will be competing not just for pride but also for big rewards, making this edition of AFCON one of the most exciting in its history.

The record prize money is a clear message: African football is going up, and the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 is set to be the most financially rewarding and competitive tournament in its history
