A Number of People Are Believed to Have Died in Nigeria Following an Explosion at Mosque

A number of people are believed to have died or been hurt in Nigeria following an explosion at a mosque in Borno state. Eyewitnesses reported that the blast took place in the Gamboru market of Maiduguri, the state capital, during evening prayers.

One report claims seven people were killed, but there has been no official confirmation of any deaths or injuries. Unverified video clips shared on social media show the scene after the explosion, with people standing in the market area and dust floating in the air.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but militants have previously attacked mosques and crowded areas in the region using suicide bombers and homemade explosives. Maiduguri has been a key area in an ongoing insurgency by the militant Islamist group Boko Haram and its branch, Islamic State West Africa Province.

The group started military operations in Borno state in 2009, aiming to establish an Islamic caliphate. Despite security efforts, the group has continued to carry out sporadic attacks on civilians in northeastern Nigeria.
