VILLARREAL kept their strong performance going by beating Getafe 2-0 at the Estadio de la Ceramica, making it 14 matches without a loss in this rivalry. The win brings Villarreal closer to the top of the LaLiga table, now just two points behind Barcelona, and shows they are serious title contenders.
Even though they were hoping for their sixth straight league win, Villarreal had a tough time breaking through Getafe's solid defense in the first half.
They didn't create much danger early on, and the first real chance came in the 38th minute when Tajon Buchanan crossed for Georges Mikautadze, but his header was saved easily by David Soria. Just as it looked like the first half would end without a goal, Buchanan scored a beautiful curled shot to put Villarreal ahead.
Getafe's chance of a comeback was hit hard when Luis Milla was sent off for dissent shortly after the break, leaving them with ten men.
Villarreal made the most of their advantage, and just past the hour mark, goalkeeper Luiz Júnior played a long ball to Mikautadze, who then scored a stunning chip to make it 2-0.
This result means Villarreal now have 22 league wins against Getafe, which is their highest number of wins against any team.
It continues their positive momentum as the season moves toward the halfway point. Meanwhile, Getafe still have problems when playing away, having lost five of their last six league games and failing to score in four of them.
