BURNLEY'S PREMIER League difficulties grew worse after a 2-1 loss to Newcastle United, extending their losing streak to six games and keeping their winless record at St James' Park since 1976. With pressure mounting after another loss in the midweek, manager Scott Parker made four changes in an attempt to turn things around, but his team remained unable to create much in attack. They almost took an early lead when Aaron Ramsdale dropped a corner onto his own crossbar, but the chance didn't result in anything.
Newcastle quickly took control, and Burnley's resistance broke just after the half-hour mark in a bad way.
Bruno Guimarães' inswinging corner evaded everyone—including goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka—before curling into the far corner. Burnley's troubles worsened before halftime when Lucas Pires brought down Anthony Elanga as he raced through on goal, resulting in a straight red card.
The second half got even worse for the visitors.
Before the whistle, Newcastle were awarded a penalty after Lesly Ugochukwu handled the ball in the box. Anthony Gordon calmly converted the penalty to double the Magpies' lead and leave Burnley reeling at halftime. Parker tried to stabilize the game by bringing on Lyle Foster for Joe Worrall, but Newcastle continued to dominate the early stages of the second half.
Despite being down to 10 men, Burnley managed to limit further damage as the game went on, showing more organization than before the red card.
Newcastle remained a threat, with Guimarães forcing Dúbravka into a sharp save and Gordon hitting the crossbar. The loudest cheer of the afternoon came late when Eddie Howe gave debut minutes to high-profile summer signing Yoane Wissa, sealing a comfortable victory for the hosts.
