In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Undersecretary for Overseas Citizens Affairs said the operation was carried out in collaboration with local authorities at centres that have been reported to be illegally recruiting people.

The centres are located in counties in Karen State, which borders the country with Thailand.

They have also been reported to be used by criminal groups to carry out online fraud and recruit people for jobs that are often illegal.

Myanmar authorities carried out an operation to raid the centres and arrest some of the perpetrators, hurling bombs and destroying the centres

The raid, which took place in September 2025, sparked hostilities between the government and rebel groups fighting for control of several areas in the country.

200 Kenyans who sought asylum in the Myawaddy and Shwe Kokko military camps were stranded while another 100 fled to safety in Thailand.

While 126 Kenyans were rescued, 119 have been repatriated while the remaining seven are expected to travel soon as there were changes to their tickets.

The Kenyan government also says that a total of 198 Kenyans are awaiting repatriation - 66 from Thailand and 129 from Myanmar.

Another 86 are in military camps receiving asylum. Many of those who find themselves in this situation are said to have entered Thailand using tourist visas without checking the country's work laws.
